Origin of Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day originated as a Christian feast day honoring Saint Valentine, a martyr who lived in the 3rd century. The day was first associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day was first officially associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. It was later celebrated as a day of romance from about the 15th century. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them.
